Elsie’s Cottage, 1916

History

Welcome to Elsie’s Cottage, an enchanting hinterland retreat named after the youngest granddaughter of Joseph and Alice Dixon, pioneers of the Sunshine Coast and its hinterland in the 1800s. Following World War II, Elsie and her husband Clive made this charming cottage their home, undertaking its first renovations, and became integral members of the local community. The cottage remained in the family for three generations.

In 2023, Sarah and Matthew Clarke - great-great-Grandson of Joseph and Alice - became custodians of the cottage. Beautifully restored to highlight the stunning scenery from the moment you step inside, the cottage features original warm polished floors, sash windows, and high ceilings. Interior furnishings include special pieces from an early 20th Century Australian antique collection, passed down to Elsie from her grandparent’s home.

With unrivalled panoramic views that stretch across the Sunshine Coast, revel in the beauty of both sunrise and sunset over the hinterland, and use the binoculars to spot ships sailing off the coast.

Accommodation

Accommodating up to 4 guests, Elsie’s Cottage offers two exquisite bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed, and the other a queen room, with luxury linens and feather-filled cushions. And to enhance your stay experience are the softest cotton bath sheets, bathrobes, and slippers.

Both bedrooms have their own well-appointed private ensuite bathroom. Each has been designed for pure indulgence, with high-quality tapware, heated towel rails, and complimentary premium Australian bath & body products by Eloura. The king bedroom ensuite features a deep clawfoot bath and a separate walk-in rain shower, while the queen room’s ensuite has a spectacular circular step-in bath with overhead rain shower.

With a stone benchtop, Smeg appliances, a Belling oven, and a gas cooktop, the gourmet kitchen has everything you need for delightful culinary experiences. Pantry basics including olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and herbs are provided, along with an organic tea selection from Tea Tonic, and Nespresso coffee machine. Also included in your stay is a bottle of wine from Brockenchack Winery in South Australia.

The lounge room is gorgeous space to unwind in, commanding breathtaking views from every window. Relax on the bench seat, reading and listening to the gentle patter of rain as showers move across the Hinterland. Play one of cottage’s board games, or light the wood fire and get cosy with a glass of wine and a favourite film.

Outside, a large grassed area is perfect for picnics and a game of cricket, with uninterrupted scenic vistas. The fire pit area is ideal for evening gatherings under the stars. Spend some time stargazing and take in the beauty of the night sky.

Dine al fresco on the deck while watching the colours of the sunset, and use the cottage’s binoculars to get a closer look at distant sights, or count the ships off the coast.

We had a wonderfully restful stay. The cottage has been renovated beautifully, the bedrooms were very stylish with luxurious bedding, and the bathrooms were just stunning. Spectacular views over the hinterland and coast. Our host had left some delicious staples and the gift of wine was most appreciated! Having the inside fireplace was fabulous, but sitting around the fire pit with wine in hand was exceptional. We wholeheartedly recommend Elsie’s Cottage.
