Hillwood, 1870
History
Nestled in the foothills of McLaren Vale, this heritage-listed homestead was built by the McMurtrie family in the late 19th Century, and is still held in the family today. Owners and hosts Peter & Nancy McMurtrie welcome you to experience the serenity of Hillwood, tucked away at the end of a quiet country road in the heart of the McLaren Vale wine region.
Hillwood’s story begins in 1854, when William McMurtrie and his wife Sophia migrated from Inverkeithing in Fifeshire, Scotland, along with their three children. They first lived at the Salopian Inn, then in the 1870s, William’s son John purchased land in the foothills a few miles from McLaren Vale, now known as ‘Hillwood’, where he and wife Emma raised six children.
Hillwood was passed down through several generations, until Peter and Nancy took ownership. They have painstakingly restored the homestead, while also running a small herd of cattle on the 80 acre property. Together with their daughters Kimberley and Jacquelin, the family have ensured Hillwood remains a piece of South Australia’s history, preserving its heritage for generations to come.
