The Bank Bed and Breakfast, c. 1891

Sleeps 4 | Bedrooms 2 | Bathrooms 1

The Bank Bed & Breakfast is housed in the old bank in the rural town of Hay, the heart of the Riverina. Awaiting guests is luxurious, elegant accommodation, coupled with warm, old fashioned country hospitality. The bank building itself is steeped in history, originally built in 1891 as The London Chartered Bank, which then became the London Bank of Australia, and finally, the English Scottish Australian Bank Company. From the late 1900s it was used as a residence, and has been in the Smith family for three generations - with host Sheila Smith & her husband welcoming you upon arrival.

The heritage property’s architectural features are extensive, with original arched front door, beautiful internal leadlight windows, sweeping cedar staircase, 15 foot ceilings, original floorboards and brass door handles, local red gum benches, and ornate marble fireplaces. The original bank chamber also remains part of the old building. It was an impressive architectural achievement of its time, helping to further establish the township of Hay. Indeed, in 1891, it was written that the bank ‘has the effect of materially enhancing the appearance of the street in which it is situated, as well as affording an outward and visible sign of progress’.

When you stay at The Bank Bed and Breakfast, you will have exclusive access to the entire top floor. There are two bedrooms, one with king bed, and the second bedroom with twin king singles, all with luxury bedding and crisp cotton sheets for a blissful night’s sleep. Couples and families are both welcome.

The modern bathroom has a large shower and deep freestanding bath to relax in, with complimentary botanical Eloura Australia amenities. There’s a spacious drawing room, with both designer furniture and antique pieces. Each room has been tastefully decorated by host Sheila - who is also an accomplished interior designer - with elegant use of colour and texture, and carefully-curated objects & artwork that tell a story.

The accommodation also includes your own private balcony terrace that spans the entire width of the building - a lovely spot to unwind with a glass of wine at sunset. Enjoy coffee and a cooked breakfast of fresh local produce in the either the sitting room, or on your balcony in the morning sunshine. The Bank Bed and Breakfast is the perfect place to experience the beauty & spirit of the Australian countryside in both style and comfort.

Things To Do

Set in the main street of Hay, The Bank Bed & Breakfast is a short stroll to cafes, restaurants and parks. Hay dates to 1859, and has a rich history - in the late 1800s, Cobb & Co operated from Hay for over 30 years. Take the Hay Heritage walk that features beautiful historic buildings throughout the town, and visit the Hay Gaol Museum - the gaol dates to 1880, and has a fascinating past. Also worth visiting is Bishop’s Lodge Heritage House and Garden, built from iron in 1888, and wander the old heritage rose garden, with its historic, unique rose varieties. The surrounding Riverina area has much to offer, and Hay’s flat landscape creates spectacular 360 degree sunset views. There are many walks and trails nearby to explore, including the Bidgee Riverside Trail, that runs along the banks of the Murrumbidgee River.
