Little Plains Farm Stay, 1927

History

Escape to the tranquility of Little Plains Homestead, an authentic historic farm stay in the heart of the Hilltops Region. Originally held in the Barton family, Little Plains Homestead was built in 1927 and is a beautiful testament to Australian Federation Arts & Crafts style.

With ornate heritage features throughout, including cedar joinery and high ceilings, cypress pine floors, and original windows and doors - some with stunning leadlight - the homestead has a warm and welcoming feel, coupled with an elegant contemporary interior.

Surrounding the homestead is the original 1920s garage and shearing shed, mature trees including oak, gum, white cedar, kurrajong and elm varieties, and a rambling century-old orchard with heirloom varieties of fruit trees, framed by the charming original picket fence.

Accommodation

Little Plains Homestead welcomes families with children of all ages, and is also pet-friendly - so the whole family can enjoy a farm stay experience together. Additionally, come September 2024, families with horses will also be welcome, so they can head out on trail rides around the property.

Sleeping up to 12 guests, there are five spacious bedrooms with AH Beard bedding - three king rooms, one queen, and one with queen and two king single beds. The Juniper room has its own private ensuite bathroom with bath overlooking the garden, and there is a further main bathroom with additional bath, for long soaks after exploring the countryside.

Two cosy living spaces with comfortable sofas and two wood fires provide plenty of space to entertain and unwind. Snuggle up with a good book, watch a movie, or play some old-fashioned board games.

The fully equipped kitchen includes all everything you need for cooking your favourite meals, and pantry essentials like olive oil, milk, and preserves. Often there’s also a complimentary bottle of wine or some homemade treats for guests to enjoy.

Outside, the homestead boasts breathtaking views of the countryside from a large timber deck. A peaceful place to relax, watching the sun set over rolling hills while sipping a glass of wine is pure bliss!

Adjacent to Little Plains is ‘Hanaminno’, where you can experience a fully sustainable farm committed to biodynamic, organic and holistic grazing methods. Operated by Charlie Arnott. In 2018, Charlie’s work was acknowledged with the prestigious Bob Hawke Landcare Award.

The perfect destination if you’re seeking a peaceful retreat from city life, a weekend getaway with family and friends, or a unique farm stay experience, Little Plains Homestead offers something for everyone.

Little Plains was the perfect choice for a country getaway. The homestead is stunning - beautifully furnished and styled, cosy and warm. We arrived to a crackling fire and great bottle of local wine. We loved playing cards, reading books, and enjoying a slower pace. Marshmallows on the fire pit were a treat at night under the stars. We would return anytime!

Things To Do

Dating to the early 19th century, Boorowa has a rich pastoral history, and the township is dotted with heritage architecture. Under 90 minutes by car from Canberra, and just over 3 hours from Sydney, explore the Hilltops Region and surrounding area, where you’ll discover a slower paced, friendly and relaxed way of life. In town, visit the Boorowa Historical Museum, stroll the Boorowa River Walk, browse antique stores, and stop in at one of the local cafes or pubs for lunch.

The Hilltops region is also home to over 20 vineyards, set around the towns of Boorowa, Young, and Harden, where vines are grown above 500m on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range. A cool climate wine region, wines produced here have rich, concentrated flavours like cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, and pinot grigio.
