The Burrows has sat overlooking Great Oyster Bay and the rugged landscape of Tasmania’s east coast since the 1860s. Originally a small stone cottage with timber shingled roof, it was held in the same family for over 150 years. During this time, additions were made to the building, and more recently, owners Bek & Paul have sensitively restored the cottage to transform it into a luxurious, secluded coastal retreat for adults.

Set on a private 2.5 acres, The Burrows has been designed to take advantage of uninterrupted views of Dolphin Sands, The Hazards, Freycinet and Schouten Island from every room. The cottage’s interior has been thoughtfully styled in keeping with the period of the home, with a subtle colour palette, vintage furniture and kitchenware, eclectic treasures, and interesting book collection.

Two beautiful bedrooms have luxurious Belgian and French linens to relax in whilst enjoying expansive water views. A large living space is the heart of the home, with a cosy wood fire at one end, plump feather sofa, armchairs made for book reading, and custom-made window seat overlooking Great Oyster Bay. Even the bathroom features a walk-in rainwater shower with stunning coastal views; and the intimate bath house, with clawfoot bath & leadlight french doors, is a peaceful place to unwind while watching the sun set over the Hazards. Handmade bath salts and SáileCo amenities make this an indulgent experience.

The kitchen is well equipped to cook up a storm, and many guests have shared their joy in having the time to prepare delicious feasts of fresh local produce during their stay. Complimentary breakfast provisions include sourdough bread, butter, free range eggs, small batch local honey, and homemade jam. The kitchen is also stocked with milk, T2 teas, ground coffee, Tasmanian sea salt, pepper & olive oil. Guests are also treated to The Splendid Gin, locally produced just up the road in Swansea, along with homegrown lemons and Capi tonic.

In the morning, throw open the French doors and breathe in the crisp, salty sea air while you enjoy your morning coffee. Leave stresses behind as you slow down and unwind at The Burrows - a beautiful place to be, in a magical part of the world.

Things To Do

The Burrows is the perfect escape from it all, so why leave! On a rainy day, light the fire, settle in and watch the weather across Great Oyster Bay from the large window seat. Curl up on the lounge with a good book…and with a glass of local sparkling, enjoy a long soak in the clawfoot bath with picturesque views.

If you do decide to venture out, Swansea won’t disappoint. A beautiful historic township looking across to Freycinet National Park, it has a significant number of charming heritage buildings. Explore the majestic coastline, including two little beaches nearby - Spiky Beach, south of The Burrows, is a protected cove with the most amazing shells; and further along is Kelvedon beach that’s perfect for a brisk walk. There's also vineyards to visit offering some of Tasmania’s finest wines, fresh oysters in plentiful supply, and Tasmania’s east coast to explore. Launceston and Hobart are both less than 2 hours away.
