The Bakehouse, c. 1880
Sleeps 5 | Bedrooms 3 | Bathrooms 1
The Bakehouse is a unique building, dating to the late 19th century that’s been restored & converted into boutique accommodation with modern comforts. It forms part of a precinct of three historic buildings that originally served ‘Watson's Bakery’ in the shopfront facing Macquarie Street. During the 1800s, bread was baked for the community of South Hobart from this site.
The original flour chutes remain in situ, and there’s also evidence of wood fire smoke and spot fires in the building’s oregon wood beams. Horse-drawn carriages would pull up below what's now the main bedroom window, to collect bread deliveries. To the rear of the building are the original stables, now used by owner & host Rebecca as an art studio.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, two with queen beds and one single, all dressed with luxurious soft linen bedding. Rooms are simply furnished with antique pieces, to let the building’s architectural features take precedence. The bedrooms share a modern bathroom with exposed brick walls.
On the ground floor is an expansive open plan living space, with comfortable leather lounges, smart TV, complimentary WiFi and bluetooth speakers. There’s a large dining table and full kitchen with everything you need to prepare gourmet meals, and breakfast provisions are also included. The interior of the Bakehouse has a relaxed, homely feel, and has been beautifully styled with artwork & rustic vintage pieces that reflect the Bakehouse’s history and period detail - including thick wooden beams, high ceilings, original doors & flooring, and deep-set colonial cedar windows.
Open up the french doors onto your own private courtyard, with outdoor setting that catches the sun. A peaceful place to read or write, eat al fresco, or light the fire pit of an evening, and unwind with a glass of Tassie wine. The Bakehouse a relaxed, easy getaway for friends, couples or families, with all the space you need, right on Hobart’s doorstep.
