History
Little Arthur was built as a workers cottage at the turn of the century, at a time when North Hobart was still surrounded by paddocks. During the late 19th and 20th centuries, the area was rapidly developed as the population grew. Now a bustling part of inner Hobart, Little Arthur offers a quiet escape in the city.
There’s a deep sense of history as you turn the original lock to step inside this cosy, humble cottage. Time worn, polished hardwood floors run down the narrow hallway, original timber sash windows have been restored, and ornate fireplace mantles are still in situ. Originally consisting of just three rooms, an additional section for a modern kitchen and bathroom was added at the rear.
Owner and host Laura recently completed a beautiful redesign of the cottage, adding vintage charm and soft textures throughout, along with a luxurious bathroom renovation.
Accommodation
Sleeping up to four guests and perfect for two couples, Little Arthur has two sun-filled bedrooms at the front of the cottage, dressed in sumptuous Sheet Society linens - you’ll be tempted to lie in bed all morning, reading from the collection of beautiful books available for guests.
A light, bright bathroom with open shower and wall of glass overlooking a private garden is a gorgeous way to start each morning, with Milie Organics Tasmanian skincare. After exploring Hobart, in the evening pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy a long soak in the clawfoot bath, with indulgent French Les Choses Simples bubble bath. There’s also a dedicated laundry space with washer and dryer for extended stays.
With a lovely soft green and cream palette, the cosy lounge room is the heart of the home, with fireplace, books and vintage decor, chess set, and plenty of boardgames. Curl up on the sofa and watch your favourite shows on Netflix, and after dinner, crack open a bottle of wine and play some classic games late into the night.
Little Arthur’s fully equipped kitchen has a pantry stocked with basic supplies, including olive oil, tea, and freshly ground coffee along with two delicious croissants from local cafe, Providence Cafe and Bar. For all your cooking needs and fresh Tasmanian produce, cheeses and wine, Hill Street Grocer is just a short stroll away. Dine at the rustic antique table, a local find, adorned with fresh flowers from Botanical Hobart.
On sunny days, throw open the French doors onto your own private courtyard, with outdoor setting surrounded by pots of jasmine, and a herb garden you’re welcome to use. Spend blissful mornings here sipping coffee as Hobart wakes! And to the rear of the cottage is free off street parking for one car.
A place of relaxation and rest tucked away in the city, Little Arthur is the perfect base from which to discover everything Hobart has to offer.

Within a minute’s walk, find yourself at some of Hobart’s best eateries and bars, including Ogee and the Crescent Hotel. Also nearby are North Hobart art galleries and The State Cinema, an elegant Art Deco building - sip cocktails at the Angelika Bar before your movie. While in Hobart, a visit to MONA is a must, and allow plenty of time to take in the heritage charms and sheer beauty of Salamanca and Battery Point.
