Crooked Chimney Cottage is as charming & delightful as its name suggests. An original miner’s cottage built in the early 1900s, it was later home to a family of seven in three small rooms, with at least one of the children born in front of the fireplace. Owners & hosts Jen Milne and Eli Jorgensen purchased the cottage when it was in a state of disrepair - complete with outdoor bathroom, resident possum, and views to the sky through the old iron roof!
Despite needing significant restoration, the cottage still retained lots of character with its original facade, high ceilings and internal woodwork. Eli, a building designer, built a sympathetic extension around the original - and still crooked - chimney, with a new bathroom and outdoor deck. Timber roofing from the lounge room has been repurposed in the bathroom, and original saw-cut boards were reused as a feature wall in the lounge.
There are two bedrooms, both with queen beds and pure French linen sheets, warm doonas, plenty of woollen blankets, and electric blankets for the cooler months. Each bedroom also has a comfortable armchair for curling up with a good book. While the cottage is perfect as a couple’s retreat, families are also welcome to stay. The bathroom has a rainwater shower with farmland views, beautiful vintage mirror & dresser upcycled as a bathroom vanity, and locally-made bathroom products.
Snuggle up in the cosy lounge on the leather sofa in front of the fireplace, which takes pride of place in the heart of the cottage. There’s complimentary WiFi, so you can watch a movie or catch up on work in peaceful surrounds. Or instead, switch off from technology, make yourself a hot chocolate and allow yourself to simply rest & unwind.
The country kitchen with wood-lined ceilings and pressed metal walls has everything you need to stay in & enjoy cooking fresh Tassie produce, and the pantry is stocked with all the essentials - coffee beans and grinder, hot chocolate, quality leaf tea, Tasmanian sea salt, pepper, olive oil and muesli. After a day’s adventuring, enjoy a G&T at sunset out on the deck or in front of the open fire.
The kitchen and outdoor space look out over a sheep paddock and the property extends down to St Pauls River, framed by picturesque farmland with resident horses. Don’t be surprised if you’re greeted by one of the sheep…they’re fond of being fed vegetable scraps, and aren’t shy to ask! Things To Do
You’ll be tempted to stay cosied up in the cottage, but the small village of Avoca dates to the 1830s, with several heritage buildings to admire, and enjoy a beer or whisky in front of the fireplace at the Union Hotel, a great example of Georgian architecture built in 1842. On sunny days, swim in the South Esk river, just a short walk down the road. Day trip suggestions include hiking to Harding Falls, the Old Coach road and wine tour in Cranbrook, stroll around the shops in St Marys, head to Chain of Lagoons for a day at the beach, and Launceston is under an hour away.
