Clayfield Cottage, 1920
History
Nestled on 20 acres in the scenic Tallebudgera hinterland, with creek access and sweeping valley views, this quintessential circa 1920’s Queenslander with its sunset pink front door, is a very special getaway.
For a century, the cottage was once a family home in a quiet street of Clayfield, Brisbane, until in 2020, owner & host Angie fell in love with its character and charm. Seeing its potential, she relocated it next door to her property - and in the process, saved a treasured piece of our built heritage to be re-appreciated and enjoyed.
A loving restoration followed, with Angie painstakingly drawing out the cottage’s original beauty. Layers of paint were removed off the old brass door hinges, knobs and handles, then repolished. Classic Queenslander heritage details have been preserved, including high pressed metal ceilings, ornate internal fretwork, original French doors in every room, timber wall panelling, ceiling roses, aged pine floorboards, and pastel green leadlight windows.
Accommodation
The relaxed, easy living of Clayfield Cottage is a refreshing escape from the everyday. Sleeping up to five guests, there are three bedrooms - the master with king bed, the second a queen room, and the third with a king single bed, plus a cot available on request. All rooms feature quality cotton bedding, and beautiful antique furniture hand-picked in Brisbane and Northern NSW, that Angie has spent months restoring.
The spacious main bathroom has a walk-in rainfall shower, gorgeous clawfoot bath that’s been restored & repainted, and vintage touches such as towel hooks (originally coat hooks from a Bendigo post office), and antique marble-topped dresser converted into a vanity. A separate powder room features exquisite tiles sourced from an antique store in Brisbane.
Or for a different bathing experience, wander across to the secluded outdoor rustic bathhouse with its own clawfoot bath, the perfect spot to unwind with a glass of wine overlooking the peaceful paddocks.
When you feel like relaxing with a book, playing a board game or catching up on Netflix, the lounge room is a delightful place to be, with original artworks and Italian wall sconces. Curl up with a stack of magazines on the sunny bay window seat, nap on the vintage velvet lounge, or settle back on the plush leather sofa to watch a movie.
The modern kitchen, with bespoke joinery and Italian Dolomite stone benchtops, features an outdoor servery with breakfast bar, seamlessly joining the kitchen to the verandah and rattan dining setting. With quality kitchen appliances, pantry, beautiful antique cutlery and tableware, and Nespresso coffee machine, spending time in the kitchen is a delight. Angie provides a complimentary welcome breakfast basket, filled with freshly-laid eggs from her hens, and honey from beehives on her property next door, bacon from the local butcher, organic butter, fresh bread, juice and milk.
Located on Tallebudgera Creek, with 20 acres of magical hinterland surrounding Clayfield Cottage, there’s plenty of outdoor space to enjoy. Picnic by the river, toast marshmallows over the fire pit, say hello to Lucky and Wellington, two rescue steers, and horses, chickens and dogs. You may even spot a koala or see a family of kangaroos grazing in the cool air at dawn and dusk.
And if you’d like further relaxation during your stay, for an additional fee, Angie is fully-qualified yoga teacher who can lead you in a personal breath-centred session, then provide you with a short practice to take home.
